We understand the concerns that you feel. Nausea and vomiting is a natural symptom found in first trimester (3 months) of pregnancy. Usually, nausea and vomiting occur in the morning so it is often known as morning sickness. While half of pregnant women experience morning sickness, 1.5 – 2% experience Hypermesis Gravidarum (HG), a more serious condition. Hypermesis Gravidarum itself is a severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy that can cause lack of fluids, weight loss, or electrolyte disturbances that interfere with daily activities and harm the fetus in the womb. HG generally occurs at week 6 – 12 of pregnancy which may continue to week 16 – 20 of pregnancy.
So if your wife has come to 4-month pregnancy and still feel nauseous, we recommend that you consult your wife into a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, for there is probably another cause to this problem.
In fact, this condition does not affect the fetus as long as the mother takes nutrititional intake. However difficult, the mother should keep eating for the sake of her health and the fetus in her womb. This is important for the growth and development of the fetus. Some suggestions that can be taken to reduce nausea and vomiting are as follows :
If vomiting is a problem in the morning, eat dry foods such as cereals, bread, or crackers before getting out of bed in the morning, or try to eat high protein snacks like cheese before going to bed (protein takes longer time to digest).
Eating snacks every 2-3 hours is better than 3 large meals. Eat slowly and chew food completely.
Eat foods that contain a lot of liquid. Avoid large amounts of fluid intake at a time. Try cold drinks, fruit juices such as apple or grape.
Avoid spicy foods, fried foods, or greasy foods.
We recommend you consult your Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The doctor will recommend some health checks according to the results of the interviews and physical examination directly to you. The examination is intended to find the cause and to assess the disturbances that may occur due to the nausea-vomiting that you have experienced.
